Power of music

The Power of Music

Music surrounds us in our everyday lives. We hear it when we are in the car, at work, when we are shopping, at restaurants, at doctor’s offices, and many more places. The music serves a purpose other than entertainment at many of these places.  Music has the power to influence mood and behavior in people and it is no secret that it is used at every available opportunity. We are introduced to music in our mother’s womb even before we are born. It is used to sooth, to hype up, to educate, for entertainment, as a medium to remember information, for medical purposes, and so much more. Music is used in many ways to improve and enhance the lives of people. It is meant to be consumed, whether it is by the listener, performer, or composer. It is a way to translate feelings and desires that are sometimes difficult to express using language.

The style of music has changed dramatically throughout the ages. For instance, there are six main eras in music history. The Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century. The music in these eras reflects the time period. Music has been and always will be a popular form of entertainment for many. The dictionary defines “music” as an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color(Dictionary).

Music has the ability and power to influence human thoughts and behaviors. Employers and retail stores use the power of music to produce a desired behavior from their employees and customers. For example, according to The Journal of Marketing, background music is thought to improve the store’s image, make employees happier, reduce employee turnover rate, and to stimulate customer purchasing (Milliman).

Does music actually influence mood and behavior? What is it about music that affects mood? According to an article in the Music Educators Journal, volume, tempo, consonance, dissonance, tone color and form all may have an effect on a person’s mood (Gaston). It is not just the music itself that has an effect on people; the lyrics of a song can also have an effect. Many people are concerned that music with violent or derogatory lyrics may have a negative effect on youth and provoke violent behavior. Many researchers have examined the effects of how music provokes violent behavior. In a study conducted at Western Connecticut State University researchers examined whether or not watching a violent music video would provoke the participants to answer questions with violent responses. There were thirty-three participants, eleven in each of three groups; one group watched violent music videos, another group watched non-violent music videos, and the last group did not watch any videos. Afterward, the participants were given a questionnaire. The study found that the violent music videos did provoke participants to react more violently when answering questions about hypothetical scenarios (Tropeano).

People are introduced to music even before they are born. According to an article in Pregnancy Today, by the fifth month of pregnancy the baby’s hearing is completely developed and they are able to hear noises that are outside the womb. Prenatal stimulation through music may provide some babies with a sense of confidence and relaxation when they are born (Lacey).

In 1993 a study was conducted in Irvine, California by Dr. Francis Raucher, Dr. Gordon L. Shaw, and their colleagues on a group of thirty-six undergraduate college students it was found that they improved their spatial-temporal intelligence (the ability to mentally manipulate objects in three-dimensional space) after listening to 10 minutes of a Mozart sonata. The results of the study showed that student’ IQ scores improved by 8-9 points and lasted for 10-15 minutes. This study was coined the “Mozart effect (Jones).”

Music is sometimes used to relax and soothe people. After a stressful event, listening to calming or classical music relaxes the body and mind. Music can also induce a more positive state of mind. It has long been believed that music can also act as an aphrodisiac (an element, either natural or chemical, that stimulates a sexual desire). Human senses are powerful and can trigger emotion. The type of music depends on the person. Music triggers different emotions in different people. What one person enjoys and is stimulated by could disgust and upset someone else.

Many people use music as a way to get “pumped” up. Gyms usually play music with a faster tempo to increase speed and motivation. According to a study on musical tempo an increased tempo increased the speed in which people preformed simple tasks. It also affected the participants in the study by acting as a stressor and increasing their heart rate. When the tempo of the music was reduced the heart rate decreased (Mayfield). Music with a fast tempo and stimulates and demands physical activity.

Music therapy is growing in the field of medicine. Its calming effects can help reduce anxiety and ward off the negative effects of stress (Stress and the Environment). This can help by reducing the negative effect t the stress response has on the body and mind. Music is used for medical purposes such as lowering blood pressure and autism. In an Italian study twenty-eight people’s blood pressure was monitored for twenty-four hours. They were then given a CD of classical, Celtic, or Indian music to listen to for thirty minutes per day for one month. After the month the patient’s blood pressure was monitored once again. The patient’s blood pressure did in fact drop. Their average systolic blood pressure (the first number in a blood pressure reading) had dropped three points, and their average diastolic blood pressure (the second number in a blood pressure reading) had dropped four points. There were twenty other patients who did not listen to music and after monitoring their blood pressure, there was no change (Hitti).

Children who have been diagnosed with autism receive many benefits from music therapy. Depending on where children are placed on the autism spectrum music can assist with communication and provide structural regularity that the children need (downey).

We have seen that music is used for healing but what about as a weapon of war? In 1989, music used as a weapon to torture first came into light. U.S. Troops blared loud music in an effort to induce the surrender of Manual Norriega, the Panamanian president. According to an article written by Suzanne G. Cusick this form of torture, called “acoustic bombardment” went mainstream after the cold war and is a common practice on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan in “Operation Enduring Freedom” (Cusick). The US also used this “acoustic bombardment” during interrogations in Guantanamo (Rapp).

What is it about music that has such a profound effect on the human mind and body? Research has shown that music with a strong beat can stimulate brain waves to sync with the beat. The fast beat encourages sharper thinking and better concentration whereas the slower beat creates a relaxed almost meditative state. Music can also stimulate the brain to “change gears” easier. It effects remain evident even when you are done listening (Saarman).

Using music to advertise is a good way to for a company to get the attention of a potential client or customer and for them to purchase the product or service that they are offering. Jingles are often easier for people to remember than just plain information. Many companies use popular artists or songs as a medium to advertise their products. One such company is Dr. Pepper. Their advertisements feature popular songs in hopes of getting the attention and marketing to the specific demographic associated with the song.

By using music in advertising the company wants the listener to associate the song or tune with the product or service so when they hear the song they will think of the product or service. This is a great way for people to remember what they are selling.

Religion uses music as a means to express ones faith and devotion. Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the world’s most famous and influential composers, wrote most of his music for the Lutheran church. Modern Christian songs are derived from popular music tunes and uses religious lyrics. According to an article written by Lorenzo Candelaria who is an assistant music professor at the University of Texas at Austin, “‘Sacred music and art allow us to touch the face of God, through our perception of the world around us.'” He believes that music is a way for people to understand their faith and spirituality and is a direct way for people to try to make sense of life and the afterlife (Moini).

Music is sometimes used solely for entertainment purposes and accompanies many group and individual activities. Must is played in places such as dance clubs and skating rinks and produces a feeling of power. Faster music will control the speed at which you skate or dance or put you in the mood to do any of these activities.  Music is almost always used in movies. It can used to produce the feeling of suspense or excitement. It is used in tear-jerkers to solicit an emotional response of empathy.

As you can see music has been and will always be woven into the fabric of our society. There are many uses for music and it has many hidden meaning and uses. Who knew that music was such a powerful tool and could have so many effects on the human body and mind? Its power spans from entertainment and fun to the ability to heal, reducing stress, creating a desired atmosphere for shoppers and employees, and so much more.

Dream

                         Dreams

The word dream is infinite in glorifying a person's life and making life hopeful everyday. Every person has a dream of his own, which he thinks will come true someday and miraculously make his life fanciful. Dreams are like stars. You know you can never meet the stars or feel them. But you still believe you will touch them.
A person who has a cornucopia of dreams always has a cheerful life because dreams give him courage and hope. He works hard to make his dreams come true and finally believes it has come true in one way or the other.
Dreams can be wild, sweet, friendly and unlimited because the more of these dreams you have, the more you grow creative. If you muffle yourself with dreams, you will grow imaginative. There is a part of truth behind every dream as the person believes his dream will come true and when you believe in it, it has to be true.
Dreaming is like climbing a mountain. You can dream and dream until your imagination runs wild and finally you will reach the peak or your dream will come true for you.
Dreams can bring happiness in your life as you forget your tears and hope for the best. Dreaming is the indispensable guide to happiness.

Teej

                             Teej
Teej festival is celebrated by Nepali Hindu women throughout the country today, 8 September, 2013. Teej is a religious, social and cultural festival in Nepal in which the married women visit their parent’s home and celebrate Teej with their mother, sisters and friends. Married women take a full day fast for their husband’s wellness. Unmarried women and girls also take fast on Teej and pray to get a nice husband.  Modern women take fruits and liquid in the evening after their puja (worship) while some women live without any food and drops of water for 24-hours on this day. As women worship Lord Shiva on Teej, the colorful women fully decorated with ornaments and bangles gather at the Shiva temples. The Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu is highly visited by the Hindu women in Teej where they worship Pashupatinath (Shiva) and perform Teej dance. Teej puja takes place also at home. Some women do puja both at the temple and home.  Besides its religious meaning, Teej is a cultural festival in which women dance and sing songs at home, temples and nearby public places.Teej is a festival celebrated by Nepali women, for the long life of her husband and long and firm relationship between them until the death this life and all the lives to come. Teej is observed for marital happiness, well-being of spouse and children and purification of own body and soul. Teej is  the most famous festival among Nepali women.

The folk music and dances add more flavor to traditional values of Teej. It is fascinating to see women, in “Red” dancing and singing on the street, going to temple in holy and fasting mood. Teej is also called Hari Talika Teej. This festival is celebrated by Nepali Hindu women all across the world.

Teej is a small red insect that comes out of the soil during the rainy season. It is said Teej got its name from the same red insect. That is why Teej is celebrated in red.

When is Teej

Teej is celebrated on 3rd day of Bhadra Sukala Paksha (according to Nepali lunar calendar). It generally falls in late August or early September

Teej is traditionally dedicated to the Goddess Parvati,   remembering her union with Lord Shiva. It is a three-day-long celebration that combines splendid feasts as well as rigid fasting.

Teej also welcomes and celebrates arrival of monsoon after a season of summer heat.

In 2072, Teej is on Sept 16, 2015. That is Bhadra 30, 2072.

How do we celebrate Teej

The eve (first day of Teej) is called Dar Khane Din. On this day all the family members especially the women, both married and unmarried gather at one place, in their finest outfits of red (called Saubhagya) and start dancing and singing devotional songs mixed with Nepali folk and Dohori songs.

This evening the grand feast takes place. The grand feast is called “Dar”. The fun often goes on till midnight, after midnight the 24-hour fasting starts.

What is Dar - दर

Women who go in fasting the very next day eat a very big feast...."daro khana" (दर्हो खाना) that means a heavy food in Nepali....it is said daro khane became dar. Whatever, the meaning is, they go for big feast that evening with deserts, mithainepali foods like sel, puri, fruits and non vegitarian foods like mottons and chicken by some communities.

The second day

Second day is the main day of Teej (the fasting day). Some women take it very rigid, they even live without a piece of food and drops of water while some others take liquid and fruit. On this day, they happily dress in red, married women wear their lagan ko pote, nathhi, other jewelries and chadke tilahari ( jewelries are optional but chadke tilahari, laganko pote and natthi is said to be most important) and visit a nearby Lord Shiva’s temple singing and dancing all the way.

Most of devotees in Kathmandu go to Pashupatinath Temple. At the Shiva temple, women worship the Shiva lingam, the symbol of the lord Shiva, offering flowers, sweets and coins. The main puja (religious ceremony) takes place with offerings of flowers, fruits, etc., made to Shiva and Pārbati, pleading them to grant their blessing upon the husband and family. The most important part of the pooja is mostly done in the evening burning the oil lamp (108 sute batti in a diyo) which should be burning throughout the night. It is a tradition of giving the diyo of teej by her mother in law to the married woman.

Third day morning

Women get up early in the dawn and get cleaned and do the puja once again to the diyo and goddess Parvati. The most important part of this puja is a banana and holy basil (Tulsi patta) leaf. Only after this puja, women take solid food. This third day of Teej is Ganesh Chaturthati. Women eat Karkalo ko Tarkari with chokho (pure) food made with pure ghee.

Rishi Panchami

The fourth day of the festival

After the completion of the previous day's pooja, women pay homage to various deities and bathe with red mud found on the roots of the sacred Datiwan bush, along with its leaves. This act of purification is the final ritual of Teej, after which women are considered forgiven from all their sins. The recent years have witnessed an adjustment in the rituals, especially regarding the strictness, but its spirit remains the same.

The actual date of inception of Teej is not known. However, it is celebrated by the women of Nepal and some part of India with lots of joy and enthusiasm. Most married women rich or poor observe this festival with fun.

Eating delicious food, popularly called dar, on the eve of Teej, and singing and dancing on the main day are the main features of this festival. On this particular day, the streets of Kathmandu turn into a sea of red with women dressed in red Sarees and Dhoties making their way to Shiva shrines, especially to the Pashupatinath Temple.

Celebration

On Teej, the devotees do not eat and drink the whole day. They first offer worship to Lord Shiva and spend the rest of the day singing and dancing in the temple premises. Singing Teej songs like "Teej ko rahar aayo bari lai". Indeed, women are seen mostly in holy sites on this day. Men are not allowed to enter the most of Shiva Temples on this day.

Outside Kathmandu valley too, women gather in public places like roads and markets and enjoy the festival by singing and dancing.

Though the women fast throughout the day - refusing to take even a drop of water - Teej brings smiles on the faces of women in the cities and villages.

It is a rare opportunity for many married women in Nepali village to go to their mother’s home due to busy schedules in village farm works. The parents invite their daughters or send someone to bring their daughters to their home a day or two before the festival. There they contribute of the ritual food called dar before going on a fast on Teej. Interestingly, no daughter goes to her mother’s place during this festival unless they get an invitation from her parents or brothers. In case they do not get an invitation from their parents, they feel extremely sad - they say it is the saddest

moment in their life.

The timing of the festival is practical in a rural society like ours as it falls immediately after the farm work is over. This festival takes place after the farmers finish weeding their paddy fields.

Hindu women across the country celebrate this festival with much fun, the food they eat in the form of "dar" varies from place to place. In hills of eastern Nepal they take porridge, sel roti and mutton in the form of dar whereas in western Nepal, they eat rice cooked in ghee which they call latte. In the city, pulau, sweets, mutton, fish make the main menu of dar.

These days it is becoming expensive to celebrate Teej as the people seem to be competing in inviting relatives and friends for the dar eating and spending more for other ritual practices.

Gai Jatra

                              Gai jatra
Gaijatra is one of the local festivals which is celebrated with great zeal and happiness. It falls during Bhadra and Children are found disguising themselves in the form of cows to move from street to street. It is very popular in Newari community. They make what it merriment and return home with charity what is given to them.
There are different stories regarding this Jatra. It is said that a queen lost her son, so, to make her happy people disguised themselves and made the queen happy through their peculiar appearances. In other story, if anyone dies then to go across Baitadi river without any problem, the Jatra is marked. To rest the departed soul in heaven, people disguise themselves in this occasion. Whatever the story it has, the valley marks Gaijatra for fun and joy with great zeal and enthusiasm.
During this, the disguised persons move from place to place following a mass with a band of people and reach in front of door where they are provided milk, bread, fruits etc. Even one year child is carried on the shoulder of man during the festival. In the evening people display Lakhe dance. It is believed that lakhe is form of “Rakheshyas” or “Demon” and dies on Krishnasthami Day. The dance gives full entertainment to the people.
Nepal is an agricultural country. After completing cultivation in the valley it is celebrated. The jatra has its great importance. It is the festival which reflects our culture and enriches cultural heritages in Newari Community.

Janai Purnima & Raksha Bandhan

                 Janai Purnima

Those who celebrate it as Janai Purnima in the hilly regions of Nepal, it is taken as a day when the men from the Brahmin community undertake the annual changing of their holy thread that marks their coming of age ceremony. Early morning, they take a bath, visit nearby temple and from the hands of a Pundit, they change the holy thread or Janai. Besides, it is also the day when pundits tie ‘Raksha Bandhan Doro’ in the hands of the Brahmin and Chhetri community. The doro or the thread is symbolic of the well wishes of the loved ones for safety and happiness

Raksha Bandhan
Rakhi is a sacred thread embellished with sister's love and affection for her brother. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of their brothers and express their love to them. After receiving the rakhi from a sister, a brother sincerely takes the responsibility of protecting her sister. In Indian tradition, the frangible thread of rakhi is considered even stronger than an iron chain as it strongly binds a brothers and a sisters in the circumference of mutual love and trust.
Any Indian festival seems to be incomplete without the traditional Indian festivities, such as gathering, celebrations, exchange of sweets and gifts, lots of noise, singing and dancing. Festivals are the celebration of togetherness as being as a united family and the festival "Raksha Bandhan" is not an exception of this.
The love and self actuation towards a novel cause between a brother and his sister is the theme of this great festivals. It is a festival that is mainly celebrated by the people of Northern and Western part of India, but people from other parts also celebrate this festival with same alacrity. Although, the mode of celebration may differ from region to region, but the central theme of this great festival remain same.

An Experience

An experience on visiting Jadibuti (Herbal Plants) was good. We had gone to Herbal Production Co . Ltd. Which is at Koteshwor, Kathmandu. I visited there with my 45 friends and 2 teachers. I learned many useful things about herbs. We can make medicines at home by ourselves. If I got a chance to go there I would definitely go there. I got chance to know about different herbs like Bojo, Tulsi, Harro, Barro, Chiraito, Sishnu, and many more. We learnt that the side effects of many herbs. We meet the professional of medicinal herbs Mr. Pant. We asked some question to him about medicinal herbs. Some of them are:
1. What is medicinal herbs?
2. What are the uses of medicinal herbs?
3. Where are medicinal herbs mainly found?
4. How many medicinal herbs are found in Nepal? What are they?
5. Can you say some medicinal herbs which cure the diseases?
6. What is the prize of yarsagumba?
7. Which is the best place for growing the medicinal herbs?
8. What is the average age of medicinal herbs?
9. Does the medicinal herbs cure diseases permanently or temporary?
10. Do we need composts to grow them?

I want to thank our school and teachers  for giving us these big opportunity to know many more about medicinal herbs. I will try my best to use medicinal herbs.
                                  Thank You
